Commitment to Jesus
We previously shared from John 20 when Mary Magdalene visited the tomb of the resurrected Jesus; not recognizing who He was until he said her name, “Mary.” Then immediately she cries, “Rabboni” meaning teacher and receives the instructions to tell his brothers. “I have seen the Lord” she proclaims as she meets the disciples.
The Resurrected Jesus Speaks to Mary
Isn’t it amazing that Jesus chose to appear first to a woman? Jesus recognized and rewarded Mary Magdalene’s undying love and devotion. He witnessed her gratitude when He healed her of the evil spirits within her—her life dramatically changed because of Jesus’ love! Courage and strength replaced fear and torment. And Mary, from that day forward, became a committed follower, in love with her Savior. She followed him to the cross, then to His tomb, where she was honored by being the first to see her resurrected Lord.
Jesus must have been moved to see her alone, weeping for Him. Jesus, being full of compassion, understood her grief. “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him,” she pleaded. What utter devotion! And then Jesus’ tender response of simply calling her name, “Mary.” And at once she recognizes the voice of her Healer, her Friend, her Savior, and cries out, “Rabboni!” Could there be any greater reward for what she endured? Her reward was the joy of seeing Jesus face-to-face; of knowing He was indeed alive, and being the very first to hear His tender voice.
Mary’s Complete Commitment to Jesus
Mary Magdalene was engaged with her Savior’s presence; her sin was covered by her life of pure obedience, and the strength of Jesus sustained her in her trials, just as His blessings restored her soul. Mary followed Jesus in life and in death. She understood commitment and obedience. She experienced His comfort in her sorrow—first when He healed her of demon possession and then when He met her at the tomb—her weary soul instantly revived at the sight of Jesus.
You and I can encounter Jesus every day—Jesus, the Healer, the Restorer, the Giver of Life, our Advocate, our Mediator, our Redeemer, our Bread of Life—each time we approach His throne of grace.
Prayer
As you pray, “I want to follow you as my Lord and Savior. Change me any way you want,” hear His voice and allow it to minister to the very depths of your soul. Spend time in His presence and allow yourself to sense His nearness. May our faithfulness in prayer be a testimony to Jesus of our love, commitment and undying devotion.
